A New Year Superstition That Worked To My Advantage
I wish I could make this crap up.
My wasband’s Mom was the queen of superstitions. She told me I needed to get my two-year old daughter to the doctor because she was grinding her teeth. She said that meant my daughter had worms. She warned me not to wallpaper the nursery because the umbilical cord would wrap around the baby’s neck and strangle her. I asked my doctors if these were true. They told me not to listen to her anymore.
My daughter called me on January 1, 2022 to wish me Happy New Year. After catching up on family gossip, she asked me what was in my plans for the first official day of 2022. I told her it was a good day to do laundry since I let it pile up again.
There was panic in her voice when she shouted, “NO, Mom! You can’t do laundry today!” I asked her if she knew something I didn’t know. That’s when she informed me that when you wash clothes on New Year’s Day, you will wash away someone you love that year.
I asked if she learned that from Grammy. No, she learned it from Grammy’s daughter, Aunt Sis. I laughed, but then I thought, “What the hell? It won’t hurt to wait one more day to do laundry.”
