Antonio Brown and CTE

Nobody wants to talk about CTE until an NFL player starts behaving badly.

I get upset when people say Antonio Brown is just crazy and needs a psychiatrist. These are the same people who’ve never heard of CTE and the odds that Antonio is afflicted with it.

What’s CTE? It stands for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. In layman’s terms, that means brain trauma caused by too many hits to the head. I became aware of CTE after my husband’s severe traumatic brain injury. His doctor’s parting words from TBI Polytrauma Rehab were, “John…you can’t afford to get another head injury.”

Many NFL players have CTE. The diagnosis isn’t final until the patient is dead and the brain is examined. As of now, imaging like X-rays, MRI’s, and CT scans don’t show CTE. It’s like having a TBI on steroids due to the number of times and severity when players get concussions.

Symptoms of CTE include memory loss, suicidal thoughts and thoughts of committing aggressive or violent acts. New England Patriot’s player Aaron Hernandez fell into this category. He murdered Odin Lloyd, and committed suicide in prison in 2017. Hernandez was 27 years old.
