I couldn’t shake that kicked-in-the-gut gnawing feeling that getting married was a huge mistake. I remember seeing the gathering of family and friends at church, all 150 of them. I couldn’t help but wonder how many knew my soon-to-be husband and I was making a big mistake.

While walking down the aisle at church with Dad, I dug a hole in his thumb with my fingernail. I kept asking myself, “How pissed off would these people be if I just turned around and walked away?”

We dated three years before the wedding. I called it “courting time.” That’s when we celebrated the end of the workweek by going to the local Drive-In where B movies were played.

Most of us in the courting stage parked in the back row. We weren’t there to watch the movie. There were always one or two empty parking spaces between the cars for privacy. During the movies, nobody went to the concession stand because of the vast amounts of pretzels, wine, and beer already in the car’s front seat.

My “What the hell” moment

It took a month to get settled in after the wedding and honeymoon. I wanted to go back to the Drive-In on Friday night. The car was packed with traditional pretzels…
